2010 Q1 Murder Statistics

Interesting crime statistics indicating that murder and manslaughter isn't rising - in the recession, burglaries are clearly on the rise.

"Celtic Tiger" did not improve Irelands crime rate

Independent.ie published an interesting article about the result of a report produced by the Central Statistics office (CSO):

The report shows that during the 5 years between 2004 and 2008, things did not really get better on the crime-front. One asks itself how the recession might worsen things now even more... the next report in 3-4 years time will surely be an even more interesting one!

Apparently, Limerick is the worst place in Ireland in regards of gangland crimes and homicides, closely followed by the hottest southside quarters of Dublin.

"Fine Gael's justice spokesman Charlie Flanagan said the statistics showed that the Government was losing the war on crime." 

"Labour's justice spokesman Pat Rabbitte said Fianna Fail, which had promised zero tolerance on crime, had made zero progress in most areas."

It seems as if Drimnagh, Crumlin (and I suppose also Tallaght) are hot-spots on Dublin's south-side which are often neglected in discussions about the oh-so-bad northside.

Dublin is 5th place of cities with high murder rates in Europe, only topped by Glasgow (4th) and the Baltic states. Wow.

Oh yes, it's not just gangland crime.

The latest example is an ex-soldier, apparently a very nice person who was part of a Donaghmede sport club and just found a job in the fire brigade.

Btw, my train drives through Donaghmede every day.

It is a very sinister, gloomy part of Dublin, jointed to Kilbarrack (the name says it all, he?). Areas like these are known for the "Knackers" (in England they would be called "White Trash") living there. I try to never change trains at Donaghmede, because there are nearly always aggressive youngsters hanging out near the train station. 13 y.o. who drink and do drugs. And who hate foreigners.

This guy wanted to help a friend who had trouble with a loud party. The result? He was stabbed death with a knife.

I saw his mother crying in the evening news tonight. Apparently the blade of the knife broke in his chest and he died on the scene.

Dublin, all hell broke loose over you. The people in this country really freak me out!
